Wrists are the most frequent site for the development of ganglion cysts. They have a jelly-like substance within and are commonly spherical or oval in shape. Ganglion cysts are noncancerous growths typically found near the tendons or joints of the hands and wrists. The feet and ankles are also vulnerable areas.
After the local anesthetic has taken effect, a small incision is made in the skin (numbing medicine). Squeezing the cyst and pulling on its wall causes the contents to drain and the cyst wall to exit via the tiny skin orifice. In many cases, sutures (stitches) are unnecessary since the skin opening is so small.
