When the median nerve, which extends from the forearm into the palm of the hand, is compressed or pinched at the wrist, it causes carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The tendons that bend the fingers and the median nerve are housed in the carpal tunnel, a short, stiff conduit formed by ligament and bones near the base of the hand.
